Alternate Picking,pt.1

It is one of the most common, practical techniques and a must one to master for all serious guitarists.(Besides these cases of guitar players that play strictly with fingerpicking or tapping, everyone else is using it!) It ’s basically a standard motion of the hand, forcing the pick to move down-up-down-up etc. across the strings. Let ’s analyze some interesting stuff now. Picking one string is the easiest thing to do. Starting with a down (or an up,depending on what’s more efficient for you or what you prefer anyways) stroke of the pick, try to minimize the movement of your hand, that in turn affects the minimization of the distance that divides the pick from the string on each note you wanna play. That is the number 1 key to picking fast. ( Think of speed as a by-product of accuracy, depending NOT on how fast you move your WRIST,but on the smaller motion produced. I t’s simpler than it seems)

If you ‘re not familiar with this technique starting with single string lines is the best way to start and get some strong bases on your playing. Just stick your right hand palm above the bridge and try to move ONLY your wrist. I ‘ve found that wrist movement is more preferable and easier than the whole-hand movement. Some players prefer the first, others the second. In my humble opinion, in A.P. anything but straight wrist moving will only slow you down. Here is a cool exercise for single string playing, first its mechanics, then applied to the harmonic minor scale, pentatonic and different rhythmic groupings. Start SLOOOOOOW (ex. 60 bpm) and gradually increase speed. When you have mastered it,improvise just this way on any string creating phrases, rhythms and runs based on scales, intervals,or arpeggios you have learned. Go crazy!!!
